How to Install OS X Leopard on a PC – iATKOS v1.0i Tutorial

by Peter Vatistas on February 15, 2008

A few days ago I installed OS X Leopard on two different PC’s, a Compaq laptop and a SuperMicro Dual Quad-Core Xeon powerhouse with 8GB ram. Both machines run OS X Leopard perfectly and the installation process was just as straightforward and easy as installing OS X on a Mac, only a few extra steps!

So how did I install OS X Leopard on my PC? Simple: iATKOS v1.0i

Do a quick search using your favorite torrent search portal for “iATKOS v1.0i” , download it, burn to DVD, pop that puppy into your test computer’s DVD drive and reboot**. During the install process there are a few extra steps so I will list what you need to do below:

# When the Welcome screen pops up click Continue

1. At the Terms & Conditions screen do not click Agree yet, click Utilities on the Apple bar at the top of your screen and then select Disk Utility from the drop down menu (Utilities > Disk Utility).

2. Select your hard drive’s partition on the left hand side then select the Erase tab on the right.

3. Now click the Erase button on the bottom right and click Erase again on the pop-up. When this is complete close the Disk Utility.

4. Now go back up to the Apple menu bar and select Utilities > Darwin_Boot

5. Type Y (yes) to continue, 1 for your HDD number (if your using the main HDD), and 1 again for the partition number OS X will be installed on (if your installing on a different partition enter that partition number instead of 1).

6. Type Y (yes) to install boot efi and type Y (yes) again to confirm. Once it this process in complete it will display [process completed] and you can now exit out of Darwin_boot.

7. Please read the Terms & Conditions for iATKOS v1.0i and click Agree (if you agree).

8. Now your ready to install OS X Leopard on your PC, just follow the on screen guide and your good to go!

Best of luck!

** I will not be held liable for any damage that results from this tutorial. If you attempt to install OS X Leopard (iATKOS v1.0i) onto your computer it is at your own risk.

my comp is a Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop
Intel Core Duo
“1.6 GHz
1 GB 533 MHZ DDR” according to the “about this mac” thingy… i assume thats wat it is…

I have been trying to download it on my desktop computer. I set the bios to do the CD drive first then HDD-0. I put the CD in and it cant read it! I think its because I have 2 CD drives. One is DVD and one is CD. I think my DVD is set to be the main drive and CD is secondary. I know that the version of iAtkos v1.0i is right. I have the image on a DVD. I am really stuck and it wont even boot the DVD. Please tell me what to do. Do I need to extract the picture? Or is the BIOS on my computer wrong. Tell me what to do!

Duncan October 4, 2008 at 6:51 pm

I installed iATKOS successfully, but when I reboot i get a gray screen that has a box that says Reboot your computer. Can anyone help?

Don October 6, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Guys, for those who are planning to use iatkos on a single drive with windows (dual boot), follow the posted instructions above (topmost) without having to worry that you your hd will be messed up. if by chance iatkos doesnt work for you, you can return the converted partition back to ntfs by simply using
your bootable winxp installer. just use the paritition utility of the setup.

i find the latest release of iatkos compatible in all acer aspire laptop, it works on my 3 acer’s which i have installed this without a problem. all drivers are working. the problem is, im not used to mac environment. (still learning) and i am having trouble finding similar softwares that i have on my windows xp.

that’s it!

How do u get to Darwin boot on iATKOS v1.0ir??

Anand December 11, 2008 at 2:05 am

Hi friends, i have succesfully installed iatkos version with dual boot along with win xp. everything went smooth . i havent followed above tutorial. i will tell quickly how i did on my hp dv2000 series laptop core duo processor, 2.5GB ram. 80 HDD. Alreadi installed Win XP in C Drive(40GB). Created extended partition (40 GB) . in that i have created D : Drive for 10 GB formated NTFS and remaining created a partiion of 30GB but didnt format it. To leave it for MAC OS.

1. Download and Burn Iatkos dvd.make sure burn at very low speed.

2. You need to have Gparted live cd.(google it) you need this to change boot flags of your hard drive. Google it.

3. download and burn Gparted. Boot with Gparted live cd. change the options in BIOS to boot from CDROM first.

4. Once Gparted is loaded (takes a bit to load). you can see all your partitions detected here. in my case i have installed windows xp in C drive. So there is boot flag for that drive. I have to go to options to remove boot flag for C drive and enable it for partition which we didnt format.Change the drive lable to “Leopard”(enter without quotes) click Apply and restart your PC.

5. before that put in your iatkos dvd inside and enter -v at command prompt you get. and wait for the apple logo and then the disclaimer.

6. before goin further go to utilities, format the drive to HFS and click Erase and close that utilitiy window. Now check the box and click Next . Please do not click Customize. The basic install will do fine. Dont select any thing other than default selected in customize options.

7. click next and Proceed further and select the Drive which we labelled to leopard and click Install. Now installation process continues.

8. Once it asks for system reboot. take of your dvd and restart your PC. now next time you see is a counter coming for 10seconds. just leave it. after a while you can see Apple Logo. Go ahead and enter the default user settings and dlick Finish. Now you get onto Mac Desktop. thats it!
Now restart your PC. As i said earlier dual boot is fixed automatically. Now when u restart click Enter in count down timer . u can see drives displayed as C: NTFS and D drive and Leopard. click C and press Enter. Now you can boot into windows.

Huh ! thats it ..quite simple.but took me a week time to figure out which settings work for my laptop. Hope it helps someone whoz looking for this process.
Any questions plz email me : anandreddyp@gmail.com
Thanks
Anand

Hey can someone give me instructions on how to burn it to dvd, because i tried burning it but it just wont work. When i boot my system i select boot from cd/dvd and it just boots up vista

fawkl January 15, 2009 at 3:48 pm

I downloaded iAtkos 1.0i image but when I booted from the DVD and go to Utilities menu it doesn’t have Darwin_Boot tool. Any ideas?

So now after i’ve completed the installation, leopard doesn’t boot from the hard disk, if I go to Utilities> Startup disk, it doesn’t show any, except “Network Startup”.

Hakim February 7, 2009 at 11:22 am

When you talk about erasing, is this erasing your current hard drive for the mac? Just not to sure and dont want to do something i end up regretting.

Thanks.

okay here is a full tutorial on how to install iAtkos v1.0i on a pc

i have a toshiba satellite p205, intel core duo @ 1.5 ghz x2, 4 gb RAM, 250 GB HDD, intel graphics, intel wireless

okay so first download your favorite version of iatkos and burn it to a dvd

restart the computer with the dvd in the drive.

you can go into the computer’s bios to change the boot order of the hardware, but some computers offer messages like “press F12 for boot options”, which is the easier way.. either way, youre going to want to boot from DVD/CD.

the computer should give you a darwin loading thing, good sign…

it should say “press F8 for more options” this isnt necessary, but you do need to press something so that it knows to boot from the dvd.

once its loading, it will show the apple logo and a gray screen.. this takes a while to load.

once it it is all loaded, click continue then go to utilities–> disk utility

if you have anything important on your HDD you might want to close out of this then use software like GParted to partition the free space on your HDD, if not then you are fine. select the hard drive you want, click the erase button, and select the journeled file system. after it is set, close out

read the terms and conditions, they will tell you what you need to select on the next page, given your hardware.

click next, find the harddrive you just formatted, click next.

at the bottom click customize

you deffinatly want to select a bootloader. the different boot loaders work for different motherboards… select one

then you need to select a kernel. if you selected the EFI bootloader then select the efi kernel. otherwise, select the stock kernel.

most of the other things on the list are hardware specific.. drivers and such

click install, skip the CD check, and watch it go….

restart your computer and you should be all set.

omg thanks! March 1, 2009 at 3:27 pm

OMG thanks this helped me. i used to have osx and vista on the same computer

Rebeca March 3, 2009 at 4:23 pm

LG E300 (Intel Core 2 Duo) – Windows Vista home in main partition, Windows 7 beta in a 2nd partition. The laptop came with a small partition, which I haven’t touched.

- I created another partition. First left unallocated.
- I put the iATKOS v1.0 dvd and it loads fine. I get to the OS X page, but when I try to install it, it doesn’t see any of the above partitions. Any suggestions ???

i see the rotating /
then after 1-2mins it says:

“EBIOS read error: Device timeout
Block 4306168 Sectors 64″

ive tried about probably 7-10 times min of 5

last time after long time it popped up and said you need to reboot your computer over a picture of a gray powerbutton logo

ian June 1, 2009 at 10:44 pm

i have it all working on a foxconn p9657aa board with 2600xt display card, everything works, a little tip, get a board that supports ahci sata mode,i tried to install leo, jas,on 6 motherboards and it did not work, i have every thing working and it boots in no time, use ahci in your bios and dont turn on usb mouse or keyboard, turn off floppy drive, turn on boot menu and get two hardrives like i did and you will have osx and windows, download leo4allv3,use osx86 tools and download drivers and install, then download ATI Radeon HD2600 XT Pcie10.5.6 -10.5.x install it and reboot, then install any mac osx86 software, dont do mac updates, i installed final cut pro and it works perfect, if want install windows, this is how you do on ahci mode, unhook you mac drive and install windows on you other drive, but before you do it switch you ahci in bios back to sata mode, then install windows and get every thing working, eg motherboard drivers, display driver, then go to device manager click on primary ata driver update it to your ahci driver and it will leave it disabled, dont worry about it at this time, restart and change bios back to ahci mode and let windows start and it will find what it needs and restart again, then shut down and hook up your mac osx86 drive again and the boot menu will ask you what drive do you want to boot, a word of warning do not change back to sata mode if you are using installing ubuntu in windows as it stuffs it up, anyway when you get it to work you wont have to worry about changing back, good luck, try and get hardware that is close to a imac, if you want cheat go to a mac store and have a look at one open about this mack and look at the info, i tried 4 different video cards and couldnt get any to work right , so that is what i did

ian June 1, 2009 at 11:53 pm

my emial address isuter@optusnet.com.au, installing leo is not as hard as you think, foxconn p9657aa motherboard you just got to have the right stuff

I copied the ISO to a blank DVD-R and rebooted. When it read the disk, it would ask me what I wanted to do with it. No matter what I did, it always restarted my computer. Is my computer just not accepted by it?

Luke November 12, 2009 at 8:42 am

i got mine working on my Toshiba laptop. it took a couple of tries but i got it working. i can now dual boot win7 and mac os x 10.5.7. only problem is no wifi. you have to know all of the specs of your pc (sound, keyboard, etc.) its a lot easier if you’re installing as the main os. if you check all of the drivers. they will all try to work at the same time which fucks everything up.

cris November 13, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Managed to install leopard on my Acer Aspire..

Great without any problem.
Took some windows drivers and use wrapper like we do in linux and my hardwares are working fine including wifi.

Not bad.

I will publish how to use wrapper to get your sound and wi-fi drivers working.
Got to sleep for now.. spent the whole night installing.

Marc December 17, 2009 at 3:48 am

I think I comited a big mistake on step 5 (Darwin tool) before trying this I had winXP on partition1 (100Gbs), win7 on parttion2 (100Gbs) and an empty space for OSX (40Gbs).

When rebooted, now there’s a text line with “No booteable media found” what happened here???

Can I still repair winXP without loosing my data, using the XP disc and the recovery console???

Thanks for the response in advance!!!

Fahim December 30, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Marc, if worst comes to worst you can always install another copy of windows xp on that 40gb partion you have. Then you can use a program called EasyBCD to add original xp installation to ur bootloader.
