PC-BSD - FreeBSD with all the Desktop GUI Bells and Whistles!

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 in General | No Comments »

I am a huge fan of FreeBSD and use it religiously for my servers but for my normal day to day computer OS I have been using Ubuntu (as some of you already know). Well tonight my laptop is going to get a nice clean format and I’m installing PC-BSD - built off of FreeBSD 6.

PC-BSD is a complete desktop operating system, which has been designed with the “casual” computer user in mind. It offers the stability and security that only a BSD-based operating system can bring, while as the same time providing a comfortable user experience, allowing you to get the most out of your computing time. With PC-BSD you can spend less time working to fix viruses or spyware and instead have the computer work for you.

Installing the system is simply a matter of a few clicks and a few minutes for the installation process to finish. Hardware such as video, sound, network and other devices will be auto-detected and available at the first system startup. Home users will immediately feel comfortable with PC-BSD’s desktop interface, with KDE 3.5 running under the hood. Software installation has also been designed to be as painless as possible, simply double-click and software will be installed.

Get PC-BSD now and get with the program.

How to Upgrade to FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 in General | 3 Comments »

I just upgraded my servers from FreeBSD 6.2 to 6.3 (even though FreeBSD 7.0 will be here any day). Here are the steps to upgrade, make sure to backup!

# fetch http://people.freebsd.org/~cperciva/freebsd-update-upgrade.tgz

Downloading and verifying the digital signature for the tarball (signed by the FreeBSD Security Officer’s PGP key) is highly recommended.# fetch http://people.freebsd.org/~cperciva/freebsd-update-upgrade.tgz.asc

# gpg –verify freebsd-update-upgrade.tgz.asc freebsd-update-upgrade.tgz

The new freebsd-update(8) can then be extracted and run as follows:# tar -xf freebsd-update-upgrade.tgz

# sh freebsd-update.sh -f freebsd-update.conf -r 6.3-RELEASE upgrade

# sh freebsd-update.sh -f freebsd-update.conf install

The system must be rebooted with the newly installed kernel before continuing.# shutdown -r now

Finally, freebsd-update.sh needs to be run one more time to install the new userland components, and the system needs to be rebooted one last time:# sh freebsd-update.sh -f freebsd-update.conf install

# shutdown -r now

Here’s a screenshot of the proposed theme for Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy - I think it’s pretty slick but still far from the current OS GUI competition.

Trillian Astra “Alpha” Released For Testing

Posted on October 11th, 2007 in Computers | 1 Comment »

I was very excited to get my copy of the Cerulean Studios Trillian Astra (Alpha release) today and so far I am impressed! Trillian Astra is graphic intense and so far has played very well with Microsoft’s Windows Vista Ultimate operating system. The loading time for Astra is notecibally faster using the Vista Aero theme filled with all my network connections (AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Myspace, Windows Live, and Yahoo) and windows load on the fly, without a hitch (or glitch).

A very nice feature of Astra is that you now have one username for all your network connections and accounts. No matter what computer you’re on, when you install Astra all you need to do is login with your Astra credentials and your all set! All your contacts and groups populate and you’re ready to go, just like you were on you other computers!! Another thing I really like is how I can have all of this, exactly how I have it on all my computers, on my iPhone - BIG PLUS!! The mobile edition is something I have yet to be able to test but if it is anything like this Alpha test release I will be a happy customer.

So far I am 100% impressed and I will continue to rip into this Alpha test and let you know what I find. Get excited for Astra’s widgets BTW, looks very slick - let’s hope they add RSS feed support!!

Reveal All Network User Passwords

Posted on October 10th, 2007 in Computers | 3 Comments »

Here is a great tool I use a lot to find passwords on my computer and passwords across the network on all computers. SpotAuditor can scan your network’s IP Range using any credentials you give it (Admin rights preferably) and it will spit out passwords typed in or stored from every computer it see’s. Spot Auditor can also reveal visited URL’s, installed programs, and passwords under asteriks (i.e. ******).

Download it for free with the link I provide below and see how helpful SpotAuditor really is! If you’re a network Administrator I would make sure these aren’t sitting on employee computers, big problem!

Microsoft Windows Vista Hack - Free for 4 Months

Posted on October 6th, 2007 in Computers | 2 Comments »

Here is a neat little hack to use Microsoft’s Windows Vista OS for 4 months without a key, activation, registration, nothing!

Install or upgrade Windows Vista, do not enter a product key and get 30 days free like everyone else. On the 29th day, click Start, Run, and type in: slmgr -rearm

This will give you another 30 days and repeat this step on the 59th day. From what I have been told this works for 4 months only and hopefully by then you’ve delivered enough newspapers to buy yourself a copy of Microsoft Windows Vista.
